Training Seminar on ‘Accessibility and Initiation of Restorative Justice’

The European Forum for Restorative Justice is happy to invite you to the Training Seminar on ‘Accessibility and Initiation of Restorative Justice’ which will take place in Leuven (Belgium) on the 14th and 15th May, 2014.

Restorative Justice brings together all parties with a stake in an offence in order to repair as much as possible the harm that has been done. This can happen through practices such as victim-offender mediation, reparation panels, family group conferencing, diversion programmes and others. Research has shown that these practices are effective and that victims and offenders do show an interest when approached with the offer.

Despite these findings, practice in most European countries is very limited and small numbers of referrals are being reported suggesting that the potential of restorative justice is not being reached at all. Research suggests that many victims and offenders would like to attend restorative justice processes, even when they are not provided with access to such procedures, and that the number of people who refuse restorative justice procedures is limited.

The European Forum for Restorative Justice would like to invite you to a two-day training seminar on ‘Accessibility and Initiation of Restorative Justice.’

Target groups: Legal professionals (police, public prosecutors, judges, lawyers), victim support workers, probation officers and any other interested persons in restorative justice practices.

Aims: The training will provide an interactive platform for understanding and exploring on how to make restorative justice more accessible in daily practice. How can we improve our programmes so that victims and offenders will be more likely to take advantage of the offer of restorative justice? The goal will be to provide participants with concrete ideas and new skills on how to improve their own approaches and cooperation with other stakeholders to initiate restorative justice effectively. Examples of topics addressed are:

(1)    Improving cooperation between referral agencies and restorative justice programmes
(2)    Spreading awareness on restorative justice among professional groups and in society
(3)    Changing attitudes within existing networks
(4)    Talking with parties and initiating restorative justice processes effectively

These issues will be examined using experiential and participatory approaches such as discussions, case studies and role-playing. In addition, information on best practices will be presented.

When: 14 and 15 May 2014
Where: Leuven, Belgium
Fee: 80 Euros per person (two lunches, one dinner and two nights hotel included).
The dinner will take place on the evening of the 14th of May (venue to be confirmed).
Participants having difficulties to attend to the training may apply for a participation fee´s waiver. This may be granted to those participants that can provide proofs of their high travel costs to Leuven.
